This cemetery is the final resting place of several members of the Williams family, who founded the farm in the 1830s. In the 1800s, private plots like this one were commonly placed on family property. This burial plot holds the remains of Benton S.D. Williams, his wife Burchett and several of their children and grandchildren. Other family members were buried at churches nearby, including Samaria Baptist church, situated on land donated by members of the Williams family.
You may note the young ages of the children buried here and the fact that three family members passed away within the same year. Without modern medical knowledge or access to the medicine and vaccines we have today, disease spread easily. Modern germ theory wasn’t developed until the period of 1870-1900. Illnesses like the flu could often be fatal, especially among the very young and the very old.
