8. Water Tower

The water tower was built in the early 20th century to store water pumped from a nearby underground well using a gasoline powered engine. The water tower was necessary because at the time, water pipes and sewer lines didn’t extend this far from the center of Raleigh. The water tank was originally constructed of wood, but in the 1940s it was replaced with a metal tank. Past residents of Oak View can remember playing in the water as children when the tank was refilled by the pump and overflowed.
